Tips for styling mid-length hair with curls

Whether you’re growing out a pixie cut or just chopped your hair into a chic new long bob, it can be hard to find ways to style mid-length hair. As much as we love an elaborate, structured updo or a super-sleek, pin straight ponytail, there’s another style we’ve had on our minds lately: curls! Curls are a great way to transform your look into one that’s light-hearted, youthful, and fun.

This is one of those perfect “un-styles” that looks better the less you fuss with it. The goal is to look casually cool and carefree, with cascades of curls mounted atop your head like a modern-day Marie Antoinette. If you’ve already got naturally curly hair, then this one’s for you! If you don’t, don’t worry, it’s for you, too (we’re nothing if not fair)!

Here’s how to get the look
Step one: Start with clean hair. Use a towel to remove as much moisture as possible to avoid taking heat to your hair for longer than necessary.

Step two: Distribute a dollop of curling mousse throughout your wet hair and distribute evenly throughout with your fingers.

Step three: If you can, let your hair air dry. If you’re short on time, use a diffuser to bring out natural curl. If your hair doesn’t have any natural curl on its own, use a medium-barreled curling iron all over to create voluminous curls.

Step four: Now that you’ve got that taken care of, backcomb small sections of hair at the top of your head to get some serious volume!

Step five: Grab sections of hair from the sides and twist them upward, then pile them on the top of your head and pin in place.

Step six: Using your fingertips, pull some curls loose to soften the style and create an “undone” look. Spritz with hairspray.

And you’re done!
